How can I reduce my gas/energy bill?

Last year I moved into a suite in an old house at an affordable price. My landlady is an older single woman in her 60s that is very meticulous on saving energy/gas and recycling and I have signed a month to month contract. I have told her I recycle my own plastics and bottles when I go to the depot. I recycle meat styrofoam, soft plastics, metal scraps, chip bags, etc. I cook at home once a day on an electric stove while she has an old gas stove from the 60s or 70s.

I take a shower with warm water 5 days a week after work because I work long hours and I’m sweaty. I wash dishes by hand and I don’t use a space heater even though the suite is ice cold. I do my best being a good tenant but I have no idea what else I can do. When the energy bill comes in and it’s high I get threatened with being kicked out.

My landlady has an electric car and tells me it’s my fault the energy bill is high because young people don’t know how to save energy. The gas bill for the month was 50$ for a 2 person household in a house built in 1941. I’ve told her I can cover the whole bill but she insists it’s not about the money and it’s about the energy/gas. She accused me of changing my email so I couldn’t maintain communication but she spelled my email wrong twice.

Last year there was no one living in the suite for half the month and I’ve told her. Has anyone else had to deal with a landlord like this? I understand it’s her house and her rules but unfortunately I can’t reason with her. I am doing my absolute best. I pay rent on time or a day earlier. I recycle and clean my place frequently. I don’t do drugs or smoke. I work really hard and I’m out of the house 12 hours of the day and she is home most of the day because she is retired.
